Forstner bits bore clean holes with flat bottoms and include fairly large diameters. They are handy both in the shop, and on the timberframing job. In the shop you will need a variety of sizes, on the timber framing job you can get by with a 1" and 2" and be sure to buy an extension as you will need the extra length.
